Calling all Cooks and Drivers! For many years, Holy Redeemer has worked with S.O.M.E. (So Other Might Eat), an incredible D.C. organization that’s helped thousands of people get off the streets, transform their lives and live independently. S.O.M.E:
• Feeds and clothes DC’s homeless and poor; Treats ill, homeless people through medical, dental and mental health programs;
Houses homeless families and single adults; and Trains people for jobs.
Holy Redeemer donates food to S.O.M.E. the 2nd Thurs. of every month. Parishioners prepare casseroles, provide a specified fruit and/or deliver. But the number of casseroles has seriously declined, and we need your help.
The good news: You don’t need to donate every month, and drivers only need to deliver a couple of times a year.
The recipe:
2 lbs ground beef
(2) 28-ounce cans of chopped/diced tomatoes (with juice)
(2) 16-ounce cans of peas (drained)
(2) cups of elbow macaroni®
2 teaspoons onion flakes
• Brown meat in Dutch oven and pour off fat
• Add tomatoes with juice and onion flakes and bring to a boil
• Add macaroni and boil until soft
• Add drained peas, then cool
• Pour into aluminum pan and cover with foil. Freeze.
Fruit and FROZEN casseroles must be left inside the lower chapel entrance by 9am the 2nd Thursday of every month. They may be left anytime after 6:45am.
Drivers:
Drivers deliver food to S.O.M.E. located near North Capitol St. and New York Ave. You are scheduled months in advance so you can plan your calendar accordingly. We ask that you commit to 2 months/year. You don’t need an SUV or mini-van; a sedan with an empty trunk will suffice (but please remove your golf clubs!). You don’t even have to unload your car - S.O.M.E. staff does it for you.
Seriously consider this wonderful -- and easy -- way to give back. Check out www.some.org and contact Kathleen Neary at KathleenSeiler@hotmail.com with questions or to sign up to be a driver. Thanks so much!
